Deeply flawed and complex characters dominate this debut novella of Rachel Woods. The story conveys three main characters, each with their own demons that drive the actions they take in situations. Woods craftily creates characters that are various shades of gray. There are no clear heroines/heroes and villains, but instead we are treated to multi-faceted characters that engage and draw us into the crime filled actions that brings them all together. The female lead is not the typical strong female, but displays a vulnerability that helps the reader to understand her motivations to live a life of crime. While the two love interests are more similar than they are different, setting up a dynamic triangle that is sure to provide rewards in future novels in the series. The plot pacing keeps us interested in the storyline and Woods introduces steamy, tense love scenes to further spice up the story. The combination of the characters and the plot is flawless without mistakes.
